The ‘2019 Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Awards’, held on the first week of March recognises businesses across the country for their achievements in creating employment opportunities for former Servicemen and women. One finalist, Alison Bannister has always helped people find their ideal jobs and assisted those who find it difficult to secure work or need a little assistance with career guidance. Setting up a business from home in Rockingham, Western Australia, she created Alison Bannister Career Consulting – offering One-to-One Career Coaching and also facilitating Career Workshops throughout Perth’s Southern Suburbs. While based in Perth, Alison consults with ADF spouses across Australia. Offering services such as job searching techniques and strategies, interview performance coaching, resume development and more, the career coach began to take a particular focus on Mums returning to the workforce. Knowing that Mums (particularly those who are posted away from family members) can find it difficult getting out of the house with a little one in tow, Alison implemented a Virtual Coaching facility.

“I have always had a huge respect for the Defence Force and the jobs the members do, along with their partners who I believe are often unsung heroes,” Alison said. “One of my first customers was Marilla Community Centre, based at the Rockingham Navy Club who run weekly programs and regular events to support Australian Defence members and local community members. “Therefore, we partnered together and I began working with a number of ADF spouses assisting with Career Coaching on a One-to-One basis. “Often ADF spouses have to give up their careers to follow their spouses career, because they could be posted every two to three years.. so, I aim to help them get their career established and tap into the local job market.” One of Alison’s clients, an ADF spouse, nominated her for the Prime Ministers Veteran’s Award 2019 – Excellence in Supporting Spouse Employment because she had helped her during a One-to-One Coaching sessions.

She had been a stay at home mum for many years and just needed help with getting her career back on track as a Teacher, which Alison was able to do. “It is such an honour and a privilege to have not only been nominated, but to have been selected as a finalist and have my efforts recognised this way,” Alison said. “I am very proud of my association with the ADF spouses and really enjoy working with them and adding value to their career journeys. “I am truly ‘tickled pink’.”

It is her continued aim to help as many ADF partners with tailored Career Coaching and meet their ongoing needs, stating: “I do this because I have a debt of gratitude for everything they undergo along with all of the Australian Defence Force members.” Are you an ADF Spouse looking for assistance with your career?
